Should Children Have Plastic Surgery?

Many American children under the age of 19 are having plastic surgery.  160,000 underwent some kind of cosmetic surgery  in 2008 in the U.S.

Some doctors are questioning the wisdom of this while many others are asking is it really necessary?

It is also been pointed out by experts that these procedures which are sometimes painful and expensive, are not helping a child’s self esteem.

That is a private matter which the parents and child should consider at length.  If a child has ears that are much too  big and is being called names at school, such as Dumbo, ear surgery to correct that may be an option.

The child should be old enough to ask for the procedure.  In cases such as this, even though there is no medical reason for having the surgery, the child would probably be happier with his or her new look.

However, a line must be drawn for surgeries which really should be left for adults only, such as breast augmentation.

What do you think?
